Acupuncture for Seasonal Allergies in Daphne, AL
Acupuncture is an excellent treatment option for sinus pressure and headaches brought on by seasonal changes. There are numerous acupuncture techniques (needle, auriculotherapy, non-needle) that we use based on the type of symptoms and patient tolerance. Acupuncture therapy during seasonal changes helps to balance the body and can be an effective alternative or adjunct for the flu vaccine. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long put an emphasis on the need for strengthening and balancing the "chi" or bio-magnetic energy that flows through 12 distinct channels in the body.
Acupuncture needles and/or electrical probe stimulation on specific points free up stagnant energy or "chi". Fall is associated with the Lung and Large Intestine channels. The lungs control our skin pores which are the first line of defense against wind, cold and respiratory pathogens. In this region, our fall season is short. We actually go straight from summer to winter. Winter is associated with the Kidneys and Adrenal Glands which lie on top of the kidneys. The kidneys are the main storage area for "Chi" needed to reinforce our body against wind and cold.
Many of my patients have found that dietary changes based on TCM can help fortify the body. The kidneys are strengthened by bitter, salty foods like lettuce, turnips and soy sauce. Any seasonal allergy sufferer should avoid sugar, sweets and milk which produce more unwanted phlegm. If you are looking for a natural drug-free alternative for allergies and headaches then call Dr. Smith. He is conveniently located in Daphne.
Daphne, AL Whiplash Injury
Over one million people are hurt in rear-end collisions each year in the United States, and a substantial proportion of auto injury cases contribute to pain for years or even decades. The good news is that chiropractic has been found to be an effective way to care for whiplash injuries and prevent chronic pain. Dr. Smith has helped many Daphne, AL, residents who have suffered an auto injury and we may be able to help you, as well!
A 1996 British paper sums up the problem:
"The 'whiplash' syndrome is a collection of symptoms produced as a result of soft-tissue injury of the cervical spine. The accumulated literature suggests that 43 percent of patients will suffer long-term symptoms following 'whiplash' injury. If patients are still symptomatic after three months then there is almost a 90 per cent chance that they will remain so. No conventional treatment has proven to be effective in these established chronic cases."
The authors of this study examined the advantages of chiropractic care in twenty-eight people with debilitating whiplash pain. The patients were referred to the doctor of chiropractic an average of 15.5 (range, 3-44) months after the crash, and were questioned before care by both an independent chiropractor and an orthopedic physician. The subjects were assigned to one of four classification groups: A - No symptoms; B - Symptoms are a nuisance; C - Symptoms are intrusive; and, D - Symptoms are disabling. The initial examination placed 27 of the 28 patients in groups C or D.
"Following treatment, 26 (93 per cent) of the patients had improved: 16 by one symptom group and 10 by two symptom groups. This improvement was independent of whether it was assessed by an orthopaedic surgeon or a chiropractor. In the group that had improved, 17 had stopped their treatment at the time of assessment; symptoms had recurred to a minor degree in four (24 per cent) of these patients and they were considering further treatment."

Chiropractic Improves Athletic Performance
Research suggests that not only can chiropractic ease sports injuries, it may even give you a competitive edge. A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics shows regular chiropractic neck adjustments can improve grip strength. The findings could have important benefits for competitors in racquet sports, martial arts, or baseball.
The study included 18 pro judo athletes who received either chiropractic care or a placebo treatment. Researchers used a hydraulic dynamometer to gauge the force of athletes' grip strength right before and after each therapy. The authors specifically examined grip strength because martial arts require powerful upper-body strength. Therapy consisted of three chiropractic neck adjustments. The athletes who received chiropractic care experienced statistically significant gains in grip strength, whereas the placebo treatment did not produce significant effects. On average chiropractic enhanced grip strength by 10 to 16 percent.
