Chiropractic: Is it Safe?

Daphne, AL ChiropractorSome people in Daphne, AL have never been to a chiropractor, and if you yourself have never received a chiropractic adjustment, you more than likely have a few questions about how chiropractic works and how it can help you improve your health.

One of the most common questions we hear from new patients is: "Is chiropractic safe?"

First, there are about 60,000 chiropractic physicans in the United States and these professionals see about 30 million patients. If each patient sees their chiropractor three times a year, that's about 90 million adjustments each year in the United States. If chiropractic wasn't safe, we'd definitely be learning about it the news.

Secondly, there's real scientific information that shows that chiropractic is safe. The renowned medical journal Spine shared an article in 2013 that evaluated 183 people in Australia. 92 of the people received some chiropractic adjustments; the other 91 people received a fake adjustment. The researchers had all of the study patients submit a questionnaire asking about any side effects that they might have encountered.

The study found that there were "no serious adverse events" from chiropractic. Some individuals did report muscle tightness or a slight increase in pain immediately after the adjustment, but these were only temporary.

Even the AMA recommends that patients see a chiropractor before considering more aggressive procedures, like surgery. In 2013, the Canadian Family Physician endorsed chiropractic care for pregnant women who want to avoid medications. Furthermore, many of our patients bring their young children in for chiropractic care and some studies have shown that it can bebeneficial for colic in babies.
